Vermiculite is a hydrous, silicate mineral. Vermiculite is formed by weathering or hydrothermal alteration of biotite or phlogopite.

Large commercial vermiculite mine currently exist in Russia, South Africa, china and Brazil.

Vermiculite was first described in 1824 for an occurrence in mill buries Massachusetts of us A.

Uses

In brake lining: because of its thermal resistance.

In roof and floor sereeds and insulating concretes because of light weight.

As soilless growing media, these mires promote faster roof growth and gives quick anchorage to young roots as a constituent of a coating material.

As packing material, valued for its high absorbency as substrate for various animals and incubation of eggs. As releaser of agricultural chemicals.

Used in isolative concrete because of light weight. The commercial name is zonolite.
